Muhimbili is treating me well but extremely busy especially now that there’re only few of us after international students left and most people are either in self isolation or quarantined. Plus, it seems peripheral hospitals have given themselves holidays of some sought, they’re referring every patient to Muhimbili for further management. It is very congested here, yesterday I assisted the on-calls we admitted 45 patients and 15 babies, this is a little too much even for Muhimbili. Hence, two patients per bed.

I thought I should share some ongoing issues concerning covid19. Unfortunately, I can only speak in Muhimbili perspective’s however, one can easily postulate for the entire region or country at large days to come. It follows that 70% of the tests made are positive here for the disease. Patients come with a range of symptoms being abdominal, febrile illnesses, respiratory symptoms etc. So, it’s either we’re that good with testing or indeed there’re many cases already in the community.

Honestly speaking, I am now a little worried as it is the case for many other colleagues. The few deaths I’ve seen so far are a lot different from what we had learnt from Europe and Asia. Very healthy young adults are dying here. Perhaps with our life style and quality of life elderly has quite different age limits. With free movement of people across the country, we’re all in the same boat. I can only emphasize on self protection and that of our love ones for us medics. We should also preach on self isolation and distancing to our staffs. I wish the ministry decides on mask for all as soon as possible, it might help.

Yours

Dr. K.
